Why you shouldn't feed kibble

By me (Liz Bernstein)
Manmade kibble was created around 100 years ago in order to create an industry and make money.  The original kibble diets were based on human diets and not on what the animal needed.  For instance, cat foods did not contain enough taurine (needed amino acid) in the diet and thousands of cats ended up blind, having reproductive failure, slow growth, heart failure, etc.  It wasn't until the late 70s and early 80s that pet food companies realized the need to supplement the amino acid.
This is only one example of the neglect pet food companies continue to ignore.Kibble is a highly processed diet containing meat meals, grains (usually wheat, corn and soy), unneeded fruits and vegetables, loads of supplements and almost completely lack moisture.

Here is an example of the ingredients in Purina Dog Chow:
Whole grain corn, poultry by-product meal, corn gluten meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), meat and bone meal, soybean meal, egg and chicken flavor, whole grain wheat, animal digest, salt, calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, potassium chloride, choline chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, manganese sulfate, niacin, Red 40, Vitamin A supplement, Blue 2, copper sulfate, calcium pantothenate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, Vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite. Dog Chow is a very commonly fed dog food. I personally, have really very little idea what any of the ingredients are after potassium chloride.  Why feed something you have no idea what it is?

Kibble contains less than 10% moisture.  A raw diet consists of at least 65% moisture.  Dogs and cats live their entire lives in a constant state of dehydration.  Owners wonder why their animals chug water, well, this is the reason.
Kibble also is known as the cause of many different health issues:

  • obesity
  • bladder stones
  • kidney stones
  • lipomas
  • toxicity damage
  • brain damage
  • alopecia
  • dry skin
  • teeth decay
  • gingivitis
  • cancer
  • congestive heart failure
Kibble is a manmade cereal that is enhanced so your pet will eat it.  They are meant to eat the same thing everyday of their life for every meal.  Many kibbles are sprayed with grease after production in order to make the food more appealing.  Many producers also make claims on their packaging, but it doesn't have to be upheld because AAFCO doesn't actually regulate anything.

Many grocery store and popular kibbles that list "meat meal" on the packaging and not a specific meat, probably contain road kill, euthanized shelter animals, downed food animals, etc.

Bi-products are all of the parts of the animal that are not necessarily edible and are not intended for human consumption.  This may include heads, feathers, nails, hooves, fur, feet, intestines, undeveloped embryos, etc.  Even meats that have become rancid are still allowed to be used in the pet food industry.

Have I convinced you yet that kibble isn't good?
